Our First Task: Investigations in Yuxi

Before we got the task of investigation, we all thought it will be a tough one, but it turned out not that bad.

We divided our team into 5 groups, the things that we investigated are:

• Safety crime & law in Yuxi;
• Yuxi Migrant Children Private School Investigation;
• Domestic animals and fowls in Yuxi;
• People selling in the market;
• Culture in Yuxi.

From Athena and Yang’s investigation, we learned that Yuxi is quite safe place, the condition of  public safety is very good.  There is no great accident in Yuxi.  There is probably one little accident per week in average level. (This data came from a traffic cop in South and North Avenue which is a booming street in Yuxi.)  And we also learned some police’s plan about Yuxi’s security:

• Use more advanced equipments.
• Improve abilities of policemen.
• Cooperate with the public.

The problem of the migrant children is always sensitive to talk about, Penny and Liu’s investigation showed us what migrant children private school in Yuxi is like.

The purpose of doing this investigation was not only because of we’d like to hear the news from these children, but also because of the poor condition of the schools that the migrant children are have.  From their investigation we learned that these schools’ condition are not that good compared with those state owned ones, and the salary of these schools teacher is very low, besides, the education of the migrant’s children is really a problem, on one hand, the government supports schools that enroll migrant worker’s children, on the other hand, the law has made clear that this kind of school belongs to philanthropy, so, there’s conflicts in between.

What we get from this investigation is that we believed the situation of migrant children school will go to a better way if following conditions appear:

• Income of Migrant navvies increased
• Amended Guarantee Law to support the development of private school
• The local government carry out the policy in action
• Non profit organization subject to migrant children school appears may attract the donation of society

The food we eat everyday is from the market, but where is the market’s food come from? So, two teams investigated Domestic animals and fowls in Yuxi and people who selling in the maket.

Kyle and Lee’s investigation showed us where are the pork and chicken we eat everyday come from, and we also learned how to buy good chicken! Anna and Stone’s investigation showed us what is the difference between the food from local market and the food from supermarket.

Yuxi is a place where we Sep team is going to stay for 5 months, so, Huimin and Vicky focus mainly on the culture in Yuxi, from their investigation we realized that the local culture is missing, young people are reluctant to participate in the traditional culture activities.

These are the investigations that we Sep team had made, quite close to our lives, and quite challenging to us, and we are looking forward to more challenges in YID.
